Busy Month for Women on the Water

Fall was busy for regattas at Long Beach Yacht Club, with two women’s events in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. First came the Linda Elias Memorial Regatta on October 7-8, which brought nine teams and over 100 women from up and down the west coast for two days of very tight Catalina 37 fleet racing. Weather conditions were variable, which ranged from no wind and socked in fog to 12+ knots and sunny skies. After three races, Day 1 ended with a three-way tie for first between Wendy Corzine’s Team Long Beach Yacht Club, Marilyn Cassedy’s Team LB Sailing Foundation, and Allie Tsai’s Team Hawaii Yacht Club. Additionally, Allie Blecher’s Team Cal Yacht Club was sitting in fourth place just one point behind. Four more races were completed on Day 2 with the same four all within striking distance for the win going into the last race. Congratulations to top finisher Allie Tsai and her HYC team on winning the event, by just one point.

Next came the Mayor’s Cup Women’s Match Race on October 21-22, which hasn’t been sailed since 2015. This year the regatta was held in LBYC’s fleet of Club Solings with 3-4 sailors per team. Invited skippers ranged from up-and-coming junior sailors to Congressional Cup skipper Megan Thomson from New Zealand. Congratulations to Siena Nichols and her team from Balboa Yacht Club for winning the 2023 Mayor’s Cup Women’s Match Race Invitational! Siena is a freshman in high school and finished first place in this Grade 4 event. The impressive competitor list included several top ranked sailors, as well as the fourth ranked female skipper in the world!

Thank you to Regatta Chairs Lisa Meier and Camille Daniels, Principal Race Officer Patrice Rachlin and her Race Committee team, and Chief Umpire Colleen Cooke and her team of umpires. Special thanks to Vice Mayor Cindy Allen for participating in the awards ceremony.
