2022 Rolex South Atlantic: Sailors Undeterred by Rain, Wind and Electrical Storms
In January, the Yacht Club Punta del Este hosted the Rolex South Atlantic Circuit 2022, co-organized with the Yacht Club Argentino. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, almost 50 boats participated in the event, facing challenging weather conditions.
It is highly unusual to have such foul weather during Punta del Este´s summer season, but the heavy rain, electric storms and strong winds didn’t stop the eager competitors from completing all seven races scheduled for the week.
The event started with the 300 nautical miles race Buenos Aires-Punta de Este on January 15, so by January 16, the full fleet had arrived in Punta del Este. Six more races — four windward-leeward and two inshore courses – were held during the week, accompanied by a social programme including a cocktail, three after-race receptions and the prize-giving ceremony (always abiding by the sanitary protocols).
The winner was Mr. Fernando Chain with his boat MAC (Argentina), followed by Mr. Julián Somodi aboard KATARA (Argentina). In the J/70 class, the winner was Mr. Pedro Garra aboard PLAN B (Uruguay).
