Americas Conference S1: Heritage, History and Tradition
Beverly Danville, Royal Canadian Yacht Club
Phil Smith, Eastern Yacht Club
Beverley Danville, Archivist and Curator of Royal Canadian Yacht Club, led this session detailing the process they use to record club documents, their vast trophy collection and their connections to the Navy and Royals. She further discussed ways to engage members in the preservation process, creating mementoes to commemorate events, and keeping members apprised of ways to get involved. Beverley also cited ways to involve club committees and record important events.
Phil Smith, Staff Commodore of Eastern Yacht Club, shared the history of their club and specifically how they recovered after a devastating fire. Phil cited the value of club history and how such a devastating event made preserving club history that much more valuable.
Bruce Corley of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals shared his state-of-the-art technology for cataloguing trophies using 3D scans. Cataloging trophies allows clubs to maintain more detailed records of their inventory. Other ideas Bruce shared with the group included how clubs can elect to display replicas while storing their precious artifacts or share electronic databases of their inventory.
