Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy – July 2-10, 2022
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy is back in 2022, featuring the most complete programme ever. An event not to be missed, not only for sailing lovers, but also for sports enthusiasts, this event focuses on sustainability and the development of a better world.
In the year 2020, when humanity was going through one of the most troubled periods of its recent history due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mirpuri Foundation and Clube Naval de Cascais took the lead in creating and carrying out an event that immediately became an international benchmark: the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy. Even with all the restrictions and health rules in place, the first edition of the trophy proved to be not only a resounding success, but also a milestone in world sailing. It was an achievement that inspired the organisation to do more and better the following year, and the 2021 event was an even more remarkable success.
In 2022, the 3rd Edition of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy will have three areas of focus: sports, sustainability, and business and social (also known as corporate). All three areas combine to make this a memorable initiative, unparalleled in Portugal and on a par with its best counterparts worldwide.
The sports chapter will be a true sailing festival, which will offer racing for all levels, from beginners to the most experienced sailors in the world. This will include 10 days of challenges for all ages; the Atlantic Challenge, Discovery Challenge, Cascais Bay Challenge and Youth Challenge.
The Atlantic Challenge is an offshore regatta designed to challenge the world’s best sailors in the fastest vessels on the planet, to navigate Portuguese seas in a true endurance race. The course will start from Cascais on Sunday, July 3, pass by the island of Porto Santo, and return to Cascais for a round trip of over 1000 nautical miles. Open to the IMOCA 60, Multihull, IRC, ORC and VO65 classes, it will award two race records, and will reward its winner with the perpetual Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy.
The Discovery Challenge will include the most emblematic race of the program, in which the largest sailboats in the world will travel from Cascais tasked with discovering the Portuguese sea. This event runs from Thursday, July 7, to Sunday, July 10, and will consist of several coastal races for the Maxi Yachts class.
The Cascais Bay Challenge on the weekend of July 9 and 10 will bring various inshore and coastal competitions for classes 6m Classic, 6m Open, APIC, NHC, ORC A, ORC B and SB20. Finally, the Youth Challenge is the sailing trophy dedicated to the youngest, which will host a set of several inshore Optimist regattas, also taking place on the weekend of July 9 and 10.
